Getting Around Panama

Getting around Panama is easier than most travelers expect — thanks to solid infrastructure, domestic flights, a new metro in the capital, and an expanding network of buses, ferries, and private drivers.

This guide covers everything you need to know about transportation in Panama — so you can plan your route confidently whether you're crossing the isthmus, hopping islands, or exploring remote surf towns.

Domestic Flights in Panama

Flying is often the fastest way to travel longer distances — especially from Panama City to the highlands or Caribbean coast.

Air Panama offers domestic flights from Albrook Airport (PAC) to:

  • Bocas del Toro David (for Boquete & Volcán)
  • Pedasí (limited schedule)
  • Bahía Piña, Playón Chico, and other remote areas

Flights from Panama City to Bocas del Toro and Boquete are popular options for saving time.

Flights to/from Tocumen International (PTY) are mostly international, but charter options exist.

Panama Buses & Shuttles

Panama has a surprisingly efficient bus network:

Intercity Buses: Depart from Albrook Terminal in Panama City to all major regions. Comfortable, air-conditioned coaches serve:

  • David / Boquete (~7–8 hrs)
  • Las Tablas / Pedasí / Playa Venao (~5 hrs)
  • Almirante (for Bocas ferry) (~10–11 hrs)

Tourist Shuttles: Private and shared shuttle services run between popular destinations — more comfortable, faster, and hotel-to-hotel.

Taxis, Uber & Local Transport

Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive in Panama City, but most don’t use meters, so be sure to agree on a fare before you ride!

Uber and InDrive work well in Panama City, often cheaper than taxis.

Metro & Metrobus: Safe, modern, and extremely affordable ($0.35 per ride). Buy a rechargeable Metro card at major stations.

Good to know: The Metro system is expanding with new lines under construction that will eventually connect Tocumen International Airport, Panama Oeste, and more suburbs to the city center.

Car Rentals in Panama

Car rentals in Panama are widely available in all major cities and airports, and travelers can legally drive with an international license for up to 90 days.

The country’s main highways, particularly the Inter-American Highway, are paved, well-marked, and generally easy to navigate. That said, if you plan to explore more remote destinations like Cambutal, Santa Catalina, or off-the-beaten-path beach areas, renting a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended.

Gas stations are readily available throughout the country, including in most rural towns.

Good to know: Watch for speed bumps ("policías acostados") and aggressive driving in cities.
